Freedom of Speech
During the course of my life, I have experienced speeches and protests. This is all due to freedom of speech. With freedom of speech people are entitled to express their feeling and concerns. Freedom of speech can be good or bad in some cases. In my opinion, the Klu Klux Klan(KKK) should not have the right to speak out in favor of racism and slavery which is illegal. Where as in other cases speaking out against racism and slavery should be better and not frowned upon. The problem is, where do people draw the line. What is ok for people to speak against? Is speaking out against the war in Iraq reasonable? Some people will think that it is not, while others think that it is necessary for the United States and for Iraq. Freedom of speech applies for anyone who would like to express themselves. When somebody is speaking an opposed should respect that and not disrupt. Freedom of speech has applied to many important speeches such as Martin Luther King’s I Have a Dream speech or Vive le Quebec Libre by Charles de Gaulle. Rumors exist where the government silences speakers or protester because they would make the government look bad.

So, does the government have the right to monitor topics appropriate for speech? Doesn’t an organization have the right to say what they feel or would it be better if there were specific regulations that apply? How does freedom of speech pertain to you as a blogger?

Photoman I think that is excellent that you have experienced speeches and protest because then more people have the courage to stand up and defend their selves when they are getting bullied or hurt. And then tell the teacher with your own right to speak and get protected. I agree with you because not all the time Freedom of speech can be good. I think the same way as you when someone has the right to speak and then they get disrupted, that is very rude for a teacher or a person you are talking to. I also agree that speeches have brought good things to our world and I hope that this will continue.

I definitely agree with you on the part you said where do you draw the line between whats good and whats bad. This is a very controversial way of thinking because to reach an agreement you definitely have to have a unanimous agreement. Also that anyone can express himself.

I like this post, but are you sure that the kkk should not say what they say just because you don’t believe it?

You got me there, but the kkk does not believe in rights for Jews and Blacks, so they do not want them soeaking out against the kkk.

In Canada we have freedom of speech, subject to a law which makes it illegal to preach hatred against any particular ethnic or racial group. In general I think it is a good compromise, but at the same time I don’t think the law should be used to stifle reasonable criticism against certain cultural attributes (e.g., female circumcision) that don’t mesh with basic Canadian values. But I recognize that it’s a slippery slope either way.
